The first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Berbice was commissioned on Friday at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
The NICU was funded by the Canada-based charitable organisation, Guyana Help the Kids Foundation, which also installed a similar facility at the Linden Hospital Complex on Thursday last.
President of the foundation, overseas-based Guyanese paediatrician Dr Narendra Singh restated points he made in Linden the previous day that training was important and a programme had been established.
Minister of Health Dr Bheri Ramsarran lauded the personnel from the New Amsterdam hospital who pushed for the service to be offered there.
Region Six Chairman David Armogan expressed gratitude to donors from the Diaspora who are helping the country in one way or another.
It was mentioned that the Suddie Public Hospital and West Demerara Regional Hospital are the next two hospitals in line for NICUs.
