Four-time Caribbean junior champion Mary Fung-A-Fat as well as former Caribbean under-19 runner up Jason Ray Khalil and 2012 under 19 Caribbean championship runner up Ashley De Groot will headline the Guyana Squash Association Woodpecker-sponsored national junior championships which get underway tomorrow night at the Georgetown Club.
It will be the final junior competition for the three players who were part of the team that helped Guyana win its eight consecutive overall team title at the Caribbean Area Squash Association’s (CASA) Junior Caribbean Squash Championships last year but are no longer eligible to compete at the under 19 level.
Other campaigners set to compete in this week’s tournament are Steven Xavier, Nyron Joseph, the Wiltshire siblings Akeila, Larissa and Shomari Wiltshire, Rebecca Low, Sarah Lewis, Benjamin Mekdeci, Taylor Fernandes and the Islam twins Anthony and Daniel Islam.
According to the GSA, the tournament will be used as one of the primary measures to help the selectors identify Guyana’s final team for CASA Junior Caribbean Squash Championships which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago July 21 – 29.
The Woodpecker National Junior Championships is the GSA’s premier’s junior tournament and will take place each night beginning at 6pm
before concluding on Sunday. Most of the country’s marquee junior players are expected to compete in this tournament.
