Sponsors for the inaugural first leg of the recent Digital Technology/ `Chow Pow’ 10/10 Challenge Series, Banks DIH Limited, on Friday presented the winners of the female tournament with their prizes at a simple presentation held at the entertainment group’s office.
The Regal champs, who overcame teams such as Trophy Stall Angels to cart off the first prize of $150,000, were represented by their manager Samuel Kingston.
Kingston said the Regal ladies were very grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in the tournament and the thanked both Banks DIH and the Yolo group for staging the competition.
He said the incentive will be used to further develop the team which can now be considered the female softball champions of Guyana.
Skipper of the Trophy Stall Angels, West Indian player June Ogle was also on hand to receive the $50,000 second place cash incentive on behalf of her team.
Ogle also thanked the group and said that she was hopeful that the competition will always include a female segment.
She said that “added attraction will provide regular competition for the females but will also add to the interest of the tournament.
“When fans come out to the games, they are surprised at the skill level of us women, this encourages more females to pick up bat and ball and get involved in the sport,” She added.
The tournament organizers are currently in the midst of preparing for the second leg of the tournament which is scheduled to begin later this month. They also assured the public that they are preparing to up accommodate eight female teams.
The next leg of the competition scheduled for the East Coast, will include 32 teams competing in 162 games at three venues. The games will be run under the watchful eye of the Guyana Softball League (GSL) who played an integral part in the first half of the tournament.
