Dear Editor,
It is singing season, which confirms that we are a nation of crooners. One after another, the songs are sweet sad melodies of betrayal, love lost, and fateful triangles. Perhaps they are more about other larger, multisided polygons.
First, there is Ed (Fisher) bringing down a hairless Sampson with his special rendition of ‘Games that Lovers Play’ for the rapt US Attorney’s office listeners. He will get to play a lot of games for the next 15 years in Sing Sing, where he can practice to his heart’s content in that bucolic locale. Why, he can even teach a few tricks about reverse mortgages to the captive populace.
Second, there was Roger (Whittaker) who had his ‘Last Farewell’ in Brooklyn by way of Suriname. Love them or hate them, the Americans always get something meaningful in their plea bargains. Truth be told, Delta might have to be recalled to fetch away in handcuffs the secrets (names) spilled and still resident here.
And in all of this BJ (Thomas) must be doing his own sour, off-key warbling of ‘Raindrops keep Falling on my Head.’ If he only knew how much… I would be mighty cautious about where I travel. Remember Pinochet!
As if all of this is not more than enough to puncture the eardrum, up comes Donald the ‘Duck’ (Booker T & the MGs) with his own version of ‘Time is Tight’ as he tries valiantly to rush through the latest anti-money laundering gimmick. Perhaps, he forgot that signature hit from the O’Jays and that it is all about ‘For the love of money.’ I can’t wait to see his version of the ‘Harlem Shake.’ In the meantime, let the hits keep on coming.
Yours faithfully,
GHK Lall
