Courts Guyana Inc yesterday handed over a $300,000 cheque to the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha to assist with the construction of a shelter in Berbice for abused children and parents. The cheque was handed over at the Courts Main Street store.
The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha in 2010 launched its campaign ‘Voices Against Child Abuse’ which signalled the organisation’s commitment to supporting and helping children and women who are victims of abuse. Raj Singh, Chairman of the Fundraising Committee of the organisation said that the centre being constructed is just one of the many contributions to society being undertaken by the Sabha. The shelter will house approximately 40 children who can also be accompanied by a parent.
Singh lauded Courts Guyana for being such good corporate citizens, saying that the contribution will go a far way in helping them to ensure that children all over the country who are abused are taken away from that environment and kept in a safe place. He also urged members of society to take a look at the situation to ensure that it is eradicated.
Marketing Manager at Courts Pernell Cummings said Courts is committed to supporting such endeavours and was pleased to assist with the construction of the shelter which will help not only abused children, but also vulnerable women in our society.
