There is this unholy haste by the government to force-feed anti-money laundering legislation through Parliament. By now, the unholy and force-feeding are both second nature to the PPP regime. I say the sudden rush is all about form, and representative of no substance. Just like before.
Look around. There is Drug Master Plan I from way back; it is a standing joke. Look again: there is its companion –Drug Master Plan II – another howler.
Lots of paper and ink for the record; and nothing-absolutely nothing ‒ for the pen. That would be penitentiary here and elsewhere. But nothing doing.
Nothing doing, despite the emblems that proliferate every day in the city and farther up the creek.
Thus, it could be said with ease and conviction that these legislative exercises are not worth the paper on which they are written. It comes down to this: no implementation, no meaning. Zilch.
It was Tacitus who said: “The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.” He was on the money, was he not?
In view of all of this, may I suggest to the President that his time and energies could be better utilized in other areas?
He could assist with removing the detritus along the newly off-limits stretch of Seawall road; and he could kick a tyre.
Last, someone should tell the President that he should refrain from the antics; they are unpersuasive, and he makes for a poor comedian. His talents are better suited to sharing ‘nancy’ stories.
