After a five-year hiatus, Guyana’s first world boxing champion Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis will be in the ring in the not too distant future.
The 42-year old former WBA welterweight title holder will face newly crowned WBC CABOFE welterweight champion, Sakima Mullings of Jamaica for the vacant WBA Fedcar title perhaps in August or September.
So said match-maker and executive of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) Eon Jardine yesterday.
‘Six Head’ and I had a long talk last night and he is gearing up to fight Mullings” said a jubilant Jardine. “Mullings called him out and he said he is going to fight him”.
After dismantling former world rater Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman to lift the vacant CABOFE crown last month at the Princess Hotel, Mullings, 30, called out Lewis stating that he would like to thrash the former world champion to boost his resume.
“It is important for me to fight a fighter the calibre of Lewis at this stage in my career because of his credentials, track record and pedigree”, Mullings told this publication last month.
“I would like to fight Lewis because he is a former world champion and a great fighter. I believe that I one day I will also be a great fighter. To prove that I am on my way to becoming a complete and great fighter I need to fight other greats like Eastman and Lewis so I am calling him out”.
Lewis (23-4, 2, 20KOs) has answered Mullings’ (12-1, 7KOs) call.
“Lewis is committed to fighting Mullings as long as the price is right and he has the required preparation” Jardine intimated. “He said he will need between three to four months of training so we could see this fight happening in August or September but it depends on how far Mullings will go in the WBC Cup which starts next month”.
Jardine also revealed that Lewis will be travelling to Jamaica next month to meet with promoters to agree on a contract.
“There is a card dubbed the Guyana versus Jamaica Showdown on June 8 in Jamaica so Lewis will travel with the entourage to meet with Mullings’ promoters to iron out a contract and make this fight happen”, declared Jardine.
Mullings is scheduled to face national welterweight champion, Trinidad and Tobago-based, Iwan ‘Pure Gold’ Azore on the card. CABOFE middleweight champion, Edmond DeClou, Gladwin Dorway, Theophilus King and CABOFE flyweight champion, Dexter Marques will also represent Guyana.
Marques and DeClou will put their titles on the line against Rudolph Hedge and Anthony Osborne while Dorway and King will face Donovan Campbell and debutant Jamaru Nooks respectively.
