President of the Georgetown Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association (GCU&SA) Shannon Crawford says this year’s annual clinic will benefit both aspiring and seasoned umpires. It gets underway on May 14th at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC).
The clinics are held across the various Caribbean territories, with Guyana’s three counties: Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice hosting their own classes. Crawford who spoke to Stabroek Sport yesterday said he is “optimistic about the outcome of the clinic which he says will target the rules and morals associated with umpiring”. Crawford who is also a member of the West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) Emerging Umpires panel further noted that the clinic will be hosting a one-day seminar in July to facilitate the senior umpires. “The one day seminar will be held to discuss any issues that might have been affecting umpires, while targeting the attitude and approach towards the game”, he added.
The President also pointed out that the lessons are not restricted to umpires but other interested persons such as cricket administrators, captains, coaches, cricketers, sports journalists, and cricket enthusiasts. They are all invited to attend these classes and acquaint themselves with the laws of cricket.
The classes are scheduled to begin at 17:00hrs, thereafter they will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17:00hrs to 19:00hrs hours each week. The classes conclude on the 28th July with the Preliminary Umpires Examinations being the last module.
The distinguished panel of instructors for the various topics includes Nigel Duguid (WICB) & Senior ICC International; Edward Nichols, Ex Test Umpire; Colin Alfred, First Class Umpire/Member WICB Emerging Umpires and Shannon Crawford, Member of WICB Emerging Umpires Panel
