A man was placed on $200,000 bail when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer a charge of armed robbery yesterday.
Twenty-six-year-old Odinga Chase of East Ruimveldt was placed on bail after the prosecution indicated that the evidence they had against him was another defendant calling his name in connection with the crime.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry then told the prosecutor that the evidence he mentioned cannot be used against Chase and added that there must be reasonable suspicion against the accused.
Chase is accused of robbing Mahesh Madray of the sum of over $2 million property of Giftland OfficeMax where he is employed as a driver.
The prosecution’s case was that being armed with a gun, Chase, in the company of others, robbed Madray at Conversation Tree Road on Saturday, April 27.
Madray was proceeding along the road when he was confronted by men with a handgun.
Chase was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him.
The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the offence committed is serious and a dangerous weapon was used in the crime.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry then stated that she was overruling the objection and was sending the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice and proceeded to grant bail to Chase. He is scheduled to return to court on May 20.
