Home Affairs, APNU condemn vigilante killings

The Ministry of Home Affairs and opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) have condemned the recent beating to death of two suspected thieves by citizens.

The ministry’s statement warned persons, who choose to take the law into their own hands, that when found, they will be dealt with to the full extent of the law.

Citizens were reminded that it is the responsibility of the Guyana Police Force to deal with matters of law and order.

The ministry said that while it was recognised that citizens have a right to defend themselves and property, this must be done in collaboration with the lawful authority and suspects must be allowed due process.

The ministry stated that citizens are encouraged to desist from responding violently as was done against Alfred Munroe of Manchester, Corentyne, Berbice, and Nigel Lowe, of Sophia, Georgetown.

APNU’s statement said the party was saddened by what seems to be the loss of respect for human life.  It noted the brutal and horrific lynching of an alleged thief, 41 year old  Lowe. The man was caught and beaten to death by residents of Sophia on May 8, 2013.

According to APNU, while it does not condone criminal acts such as thieving, accused criminals and perpetrators should be brought to justice using the judicial system.

Persons or communities should not take the law into their own hands. APNU said that this is a recipe for anarchy which is dangerous for any society.
