A teenage farmer was unintentionally shot in his left foot by a man with a 12-gauge shotgun in the backlands of Letter Kenny, on Friday morning.
Injured is Vickey Amin, 17, of Letter Kenny Village, Corentyne, Berbice. He is currently a patient at the Anamayha Memorial Hospital, Belvedere, Corentyne.
Meanwhile, police officers are searching for the shooter, who is suspected to have fled the area sometime after the incident. Neighbours said they have not seen the man since Friday afternoon.
Jagdat Mangru, guardian of Amin told Stabroek News yesterday that on Friday morning he left Amin in the backdam to watch over the cattle, as a cow was expected to give birth.
However, sometime after he got home, Amin arrived on a motorcycle with his foot bleeding profusely.
Mangru said the shooter, who was riding the motorcycle, told him he “was playing with his gun and the trigger slipped” and Amin was hit in the foot.
Mangru told this publication that he rushed Amin to the Anamayha Hospital and the shooter told him and other family members that he will stand the expenses. The shooter has only handed over a sum of $20,000, the man said.
Mangru said when he asked the shooter where the gun was, he was told that he hid it in some bushes at the backdam. He said he did not know what the shooter was doing in the backlands as he is not a farmer.
Police are investigating.
