Junior athletes will set alight the Police Sports Club ground today as the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) host the annual IAAF World Athletics Day Championship from 9am.
Sprint sensation Tevin Garraway is expected to blast out of the blocks as he usually does when the starter’s gun fires in the junior boys 100m.
The CARIFTA 100m and 200m finalist clocked 11.4 seconds last year and defeated Samuel Doris and 2013 CARIFTA bronze medalist Jason Yaw. Today he will be looking to defend his 100m.
Also expected to compete and steal the show in the girls 1500m is Cassey George. George stands presently as the best junior female 1500m athlete. She has under her belt, the 2013 CARIFTA 1500m gold medal and 800m silver medal.
Multi-champ at the National Schools Championship Jevina Sampson, CARIFTA 400m finalist Avon Samuel and Natrica Hooper will be under starters order in the 400.
The Championship which comprises of two categories, under-16 and under-18, will see the athletes competing for prizes.
The Inter Schools segment for the U-16 athletes will be allowed to compete in one track and field event; 80m, 150m, 1000m and 2000m race walk, long jump, shot put and discus throw.
Events in the Youth category of Championship for under-18 athletes for the boys are 100m, 800m, 3000m, long jump, javelin, 3000m walk race; for the girls100m,400m, 1500m, long jump, discus, shot put and 2000m race walk. Athletes in this category will only be allowed to participate in one event.
Podium athletes in each category will be rewarded with medals while the school with the most points in the Inter Schools Category will be awarded with the IAAF trophy.
Christiansburg Wismar Secondary School won that category last year with 48 points ahead of New Campbellville Secondary School (30) and New Silver City Secondary (21).
