A release from the association said that shipping industry executives from Europe and North America will join their counterparts from the Caribbean and Latin America for three days of discussion and presentations. The Inter-American Develop-ment Bank is also expected to send a representative to the conference to make a presentation to the regional shipping industry.
The topics for presentations will cover a wide range of issues and trends in the maritime sector, including international trade; corruption; and, the readiness of marine pilots for the opening of the expanded Panama Canal and the massive ships which will consequently be servicing regional ports. Alternative energy and the economics of cargo by sea will also be examined.
The release said that advances in marine port technology and the implications for productivity and staffing will also be discussed under the topic ‘automated terminals’. Participants will be exposed to the latest trends and technological developments in marine terminals.
Of great interest will be the topic ‘What regional ports need to do to become competitive”. National shipping associations, their contribution to development and potential for facilitating economic growth will also be discussed.
