A 30-year-old mother of three was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) yesterday morning after she was found with knife wounds at the K&VC Hotel on South Road.
Police say that Maryann Sunita Nauth of 110 North Vryheid’s Lust was discovered around 02:15hrs yesterday with multiple stab wounds about her body.
Relatives of Nauth said that when they were taken to identify her body at the Lyken Funeral Parlour they noticed stab and slash wounds to her arms, breasts and abdomen. A brother-in-law of Nauth speculated that she may have sustained the injuries to her arms while attempting to fend off her attacker.
Additionally, a photograph taken of the crime scene revealed that the knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was found lodged in the woman’s body.
Nadira (only name given), a sister of Nauth, said that she last saw and spoke to her sister around 17:00hrs on Saturday. Nauth had told her sister that she was on her way to meet her ex-husband. The two had planned to meet in front of Demico House on Camp Street.
According to relatives, Nauth and the man had been married for 13 years before they got a divorce, Nadira said however that even after the divorce the two continued an on and off relationship.
Reports say that a photo of Nauth and a male figure was discovered in the hotel room where she was found.
Nadira said that when her sister failed to return home on Saturday evening she began to worry since it was uncharacteristic of Nauth to stay out the entire night.
She said that yesterday morning, multiple calls were made to Nauth’s cellular phone in an attempt to ascertain her location. These were all in vain. Nadira said that her sister’s phone rang out every time she called, except for one instance where a male individual answered the phone and said that “no Maryann aint deh hey.”
Nadira became even more suspicious of her sister’s unknown whereabouts after the family received a call from the ex-husband’s mother, who asked her if she knew where Nauth was, and shared that her son also had not returned home on Saturday evening after leaving to meet Nauth.
Nadira said that the ex-husband’s mother suggested that she check the hospitals after she said that Nauth had not been seen since Saturday night.
She said that while en route to the hospital the taxi driver, who is a friend of the family, received a call from someone who told him that a woman by the name of “Maryann” had been found dead at the K&VC Hotel.
As such the group changed directions and headed to the hotel.
Nadira said that when she and other relatives turned up at K&VC and inquired if her sister had indeed been murdered she was turned away by the receptionist who told her that she was unaware of any such occurrence at the hotel.
With some amount of hope renewed, Nadira and her other relatives made their way to GPHC where her worst fears were confirmed. She said that she was told that her sister had indeed been taken to the hospital, but that she was already dead when she was brought in.
Hospital officials say that Nauth was rushed to the GPHC at around 06:15hrs where she was pronounced DOA.
After confirming that Nauth had indeed been murdered, Nadira and her relatives went over to the Brickdam Police Station whose ranks referred her to the Alberttown Police Station. Ranks from the Albertttown Police Station then took Nadira and her relatives to the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour where only the male relatives were taken in to identify Nauth’s body.
“They only let the men go in because they probably know how we wudda behave.”
“They always had a rocky relationship,” said Nadira, explaining Nauth’s and the ex-husband’s time together.
She said that last December the ex-husband advanced on Nauth with an ice-pick and a hammer during an argument between two. Nauth and the man had shared the downstairs apartment of the 110 Vryheid’s Lust residence while Nadira and other relatives occupied the upstairs apartment. Nadira said that her sister was spared after she ran and hid in an upstairs bedroom. She said that she did not know what sparked the outburst, but said that the ex-husband had been somewhat annoyed when he returned home that day.
“He was always violent and would abuse,” said another relative.
During this altercation, Nauth reportedly had decided to end the relationship once and for all.
Nadira said that before Nauth fled the downstairs flat she heard her sister screaming “loose me, loose me, this is the last time this gon happen, I fed up with this kinda life.”
Nadira said that as far as she is aware, the two have since only met for Nauth to collect money to help take care of their children.
Up to late last evening police were still in search of the man with whom Nauth checked into the hotel.
