Two men were remanded to prison yesterday after they appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of robbery under arms.
Duncan Vanfield and Shane Morgan, a miner of 149 D’Andrade Street, Campbellville pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them.
The duo is accused of robbing businesswoman, Kim Sarwan of cash and other items at her Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara home on April 20.
According to the prosecution facts, Sarwan was at her home when she received a phone call from an unknown person who wanted to purchase several items. Three men then approached her home pretending to be customers.
The men, being armed with handguns then proceeded to rob her of one BlackBerry phone valued $73,000, 25 sets of Perry Ellis perfumes valued $250,000 and over $1million in cash totalling $1.5 million.
Morgan’s attorney in his bail application said that his client is 20 and the father of a young child and that he was never identified as the person who committed the crime.
The police prosecutor objected to bail on the ground that a dangerous weapon was used to commit the crime.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry then refused bail and remanded the duo to prison. They will make their next court appearance on May 15 at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
