Guyanese singer Roger ‘Young Bill Rogers’ Hinds has received a cheque for US$9,300 for his participation in the 2013 Trinidad and Tobago International Chutney Soca Monarch competition held in that country on January 26.
According to a GINA press release, organizer of the competition George Singh presented the cheque to Hinds on May 8.
Though he did not win a place among the top 10 finishers, Hinds said that he had a great performing experience.
“This is one of the biggest stages I have ever performed on in my entire life, my entire career,” he said.
Hinds won the Mashramani 2013 chutney competition held at the National Cultural Centre on January 5, automatically qualifying him to participate in the Trinidad competition. Seventeen chutney soca artistes competed in the monarch contest.
While he was disappointed that he did not bring home the crown, Hinds has vowed to keep trying, and with the support of the ministry and the nation, intends go after the title. Meanwhile, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony thanked Singh for supporting the local chutney contest and Young Bill Rogers.
