Guyana’s racquet wielders were yesterday eliminated from the singles competition of the Liebherr World table tennis championships in Paris, France.
Paul David and Chelsea Edghill placed second in their groups while Christopher Franklin placed third. Trenace Lowe, who is based in the United States of America was unable to participate owing to a flight mix up, president of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Godfrey Munroe said yesterday.
David, bronze medallist in the men’s singles at last year’s Caribbean championships, was the only player to win a match.
He defeated United Arab Emirates’ Jassem Linjavwi 4-3. David won 11-6, 11-7, 4-11, 13-11, 6-11, 13-15 and 11-4.
In the match to see who would come out from the group David lost 0-4 to Venezuela’s Henry Mujica 10-12, 6-11, 6-11 and 5-11.
The other male player Franklin, competing in Group 91, lost to Valdas Martinkus of Lithuania 1-4. Franklin lost 7-11, 9-11, 11-2, 7-11 and 4-11 and later lost to Eric Berner of Norway 1-4. Franklin lost 6-11, 6-11, 11-6, 6-1 and 10-12.
In the women’s singles competition Edghill was beaten by Johana Araque of Colombia 6-11, 8-11, 10-12, 7-11 while Araque defeated France’s Marie Migot 4-0 to advance from the group.
Lowe and David lost by walkover to Matt Stubbington and Elisabeth Priest while Edghill and Lowe lost in similar manner to Mueena Mohamed and Aminath Shareef.
In the mixed doubles Franklin and Edghill lost to Phillip Xiao and Annie Yang 13-11, 9-11, 11-6 and 11-7.
David and Franklin however are down to face Hamad Buhijji and Mohamed Bushelaibi of New Zealand in a men’s doubles encounter.
