A 30-year-old man appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was remanded over shotgun cartridges in a taxi.
It is alleged that Angel Daniels of Aurora, East Bank Essequibo had in his possession seven shotgun cartridges without being the owner of a firearm licence on March 21.
According to the prosecution, the police put up a road block at Fairfield, Essequibo Coast during which they stopped motorcar HB 1410 in which Daniels was a passenger.
A search was carried out and the cartridges were found in a bag in his possession. Daniels then said he was given them by one ‘Trini’. The police say that ‘Trini’ was then contacted but he said that he had no knowledge of the cartridges.
Daniels was subsequently arrested and charged. He pleaded not guilty to this charge.
The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that Daniels has no fixed place of abode and if granted bail he might flee the jurisdiction.
Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat requested reasonable bail and said that his client, who is a farmer, had no knowledge of what was in the bag.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry then refused bail and transferred the matter to the Suddie Magistrate’s Court where Daniels will make his next appearance on May 16.
A second charge was that at Charity, Essequibo Coast he entered Guyana by sea and failed to present himself to an immigration officer.
Daniels pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined $30, 000 with an alternative of six months in prison.
