The four suspects in last week’s fatal attack on Nigel Lowe have been released on station bail as police continue their search for those responsible for beating and chopping the man until he died.
A police official told Stabroek News yesterday that their release came after the 72 hours permitted by law for them to be held had expired. Among those held were the tenants of Lowe’s mother.
Based on what this newspaper was told, about 30 persons were involved in the attack which began in a yard at `A’ Field, Sophia where the tenants lived and ended at `B’ Field, Sophia.
There was a recent spate of robberies in ‘A’ Field Sophia. It was alleged that earlier Wednesday morning residents had caught 40-year-old Lowe and two “armed” men breaking into a house and raised an alarm. The two men managed to escape but Lowe was cornered in an outdoor latrine located in the yard where Lowe mother’s tenants lived.
The man attempted to escape the residents who by then had surrounded him and were beating him with cutlasses and sticks. He ended up in the house located in the yard and the assault continued there. The man was then taken to ‘B’ Field, Sophia where the beating continued. This newspaper had been told that around 2 am, Lowe’s lifeless body was tied to a utility pole and then covered with pieces of wood. The residents had apparently intended to burn the body but for some reason decided not to.
Meanwhile, Lowe’s mother Jenny told this newspaper that she had not had time to check with the police for an update on the case since she was busy finalizing funeral arrangements.
She said that Lowe will be laid to rest tomorrow.
Police officials had told Stabroek News that the difficulty with this case was that persons were not revealing the names of those involved. All that is being given are descriptions.
