The Berbice Bridge Company Incorporated (BBCI) will once again provide corporate support for the annual Independence Horse Race meet which will be run off Sunday at the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club, Bush Lot, Corentyne.
During a simple ceremony at the company’s Main Street office yesterday, its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Omadat Samaroo, handed over a sponsorship cheque and the winner’s trophy to the Honorary President of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA), Cecil Kennard.
Kennard expressed gratitude for the sponsorship, stating that he hopes the support continues in years to come.
Samaroo disclosed that his company will be supporting the ‘Sport of Kings’ in the future.
He also said that the BCCI was prepared to support other disciplines and will work effortlessly in order to put Guyana on the map as a premier sporting nation.
It was also revealed by Samaroo that some of the profits of the meet will be used to facilitate the GHRA and to upgrade the track at Bush Lot.
On Sunday, seven exciting races are carded among the country’s top horses. The D1 and Lower over a distance of seven furlongs will be the highlight of the meet with the winner pocketing a whopping $500,000, while the runner up is set to receive $250,000.
Third and fourth place finishers will receive $125,000 and $63,000 respectively.
The three-year-old event for West Indian horses and the F and Lower class winners will each earn $320,000 with the eventual second, third and fourth place finishers set to take home $160,000, $80,000 and $40,000 respectively. The G and Lower class event over seven furlongs will see the winner walk away with a purse worth $300,000.
Second, third and fourth place finishers will receive $150,000, $75,000 and $38,000 respectively.
Other feature races include I and Lower over six furlongs with the first place winner receiving $180,000 and the winner of the J2 and Lower over six furlongs receiving $150,000. The K and Lower race over five furlongs will see the winner carting off $100,000.
All races will be run under the rules and stipulations of the GHRA.
