Television broadcaster CN Sharma will now have to face trial in the High Court for carnal knowledge he allegedly committed against a then 13-year-old girl after Magistrate Susanna Lovell yesterday found that a prima facie case was made out against him.
Sharma’s lawyer Nigel Hughes confirmed today that that the veteran broadcaster will now have to stand trial in the High Court.
Sharma was charged in April of 2010 and was initially refused bail but collapsed in court and had to be rushed for medical treatment. After spending a short time in prison he was placed on $2M bail.
Later he was also charged with attempting to obstruct the course of justice. It was alleged that he knowingly attempted to obstruct the course of justice by removing two of the girls at the centre of sex abuse allegations against him from their known address and taking them to a house at 123 Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara in order to prevent them from being questioned by police. The magistrate had granted him $100,000 bail. He was also arraigned on another charge of witness tampering and was released on $150,000 bail. Hughes said those matters have been dismissed.
