The New Building Society has responded to a request from the management committee of the Blairmont Crematorium and Memorial Gardens Society for assistance by donating $1M for the facility which will be located south of the Blairmont Sugar Estate.
A release from the NBS said the Chairman, Moen Mc Doom and the board of directors were pleased to support the project as part of the Society’s corporate social responsibility, as they recognised that no such facility existed in the West Berbice and lower East Berbice areas.
The management committee, chaired by Nowrang Persaud will oversee the construction of the crematorium and memorial garden. The facilities will include a garden setting with areas for two pyres, a viewing pavilion with seating for over 200 persons, prayer/meditation rooms, a memorial hall, a car park, washrooms, and refreshment facilities.
The release said that Persaud expressed gratitude for the NBS contribution and indicated although donations have been received from the Diaspora and some other businesses; the committee was appealing for other donors to come forward since the total project cost is $15M.
