The man believed to be responsible for the stabbing to death of 30 year old Maryann Sunita Nauth was yesterday arrested in Essequibo, while a Post-Mortem Examination (PME) carried out revealed that the woman was stabbed a total of 35 times.
Police Commissioner Leroy Brummel yesterday said that the man was apprehended as he was walking along a road in Charity, Essequibo Coast. Brummel said that acting on information that they received, ranks of the Guyana Police Force captured the man in the area.
Relatives of Nauth said they were told of the arrest while filling out paper work at a police station yesterday. They said that the officers confirmed that the man was indeed 33 year old Vinod Balgobin, Nauth’s ex-husband.
Meanwhile, relatives of Balgobin’s mother, who had been taken into custody on Tuesday, said that the woman is to be released this morning.
Balgobin’s mother was taken into custody on Tuesday after she was asked by officers to deliver a statement. Relatives of the woman had said that the police had initially told her they only wanted a statement, but informed them that they had decided to keep her for 72 hours after she delivered her statement. Relatives say they were not told why the woman was being detained but speculated that it might have been as a result of something she had told them.
Nauth’s body was on Sunday morning discovered in room 209 of the K&VC Hotel on South Road after last leaving her home around 17:00 on Saturday evening. She had told relatives that she was going to meet with Balgobin to collect money for their children.
