Dr Ramesh Sugrim, 60, of Williamsburg, Corentyne appeared at the Fort Welling-ton Court on Wednesday charged with failing to stop after an accident and failing to render assistance.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges when he appeared before Magistrate Roby Benn and was granted his pre-trial freedom in the sum of $30,000.
Dr. Sugrim who was represented by attorney-at-law, Joel Persid-Edmond is scheduled to return to court sometime next month.
It is alleged that on Sunday, May 12 around 8:15 pm, Dr. Sugrim was driving motor vehicle PMM 8310 at Moor Park/Number 37 Village, West Berbice when he reportedly struck down Marslyn True, 51, resulting in her death.
Police said the causing death matter is still being investigated and that charges may be likely.
Reports are that Dr. Sugrim kept on driving, apparently not realizing that he had hit someone.
It happened that an off-duty police officer was travelling in another vehicle behind the doctor’s and witnessed the accident.
The officer contacted ranks at the Fort Wellington Station and provided them with the registration number of the car. A roadblock was set up and the driver was apprehended and the vehicle detained.
The woman who had earlier indulged in a Mother’s Day celebration at her home was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when she was hit.
Her body was taken to Fort Wellington Hospital mortuary where the identity was confirmed after 2 pm on Monday.
