I like the AFCs decision to withhold support for a critical bill which the government wants passed to ensure its international reputation and status is maintained. Finally they seem willing to play hardball with the PPP/C. For too long the opposition has allowed the PPP/C to run roughshod over it. But it seems that an ideal opportunity has now arisen whereby hardball politics can be played which could result in the betterment of our country.
Yes, such a decision by the AFC may be counter to Guyana’s benefit, but so would be the PPP/C if it does not give in to some of the requests ‒ perfectly logical and acceptable demands ‒ outlined by the AFC. If neither budges and the bill is not passed within the stipulated time-frame then the major blame has to be placed on the PPP/C, and especially the President, for they are the ones with the power to compromise to move the process forward.
It is our President who has to show willingness to make compromises in the interest of our country. He has to set the example for he is our leader.
One only has to look at the US political scene to see that it was President Obama who had to compromise in the interest of his country. Oh, if only our President would do likewise.
Let the hardball wheeling and dealing begin! Finally, real politics is being played out in our country. I wonder who will win out in the end? Will it continue to be overwhelmingly in favour of the PPP/C or will the spine of the opposition finally surface?
