Three of the eight shortlisted amateur boxers scheduled to travel to Cuba for a month-long training and competition stint next month will definitely wing out after Sterling Products Limited and the Guyana Police Service (GPS) agreed to stand the cost of their airfare.
Policemen Imran Khan and Dennis Thomas were supported by the GPS while another boxer will be supported by the local food manufacturer.
The cost of the airfare is US$890 per person.
The shortlisted boxers are Khan, Thomas, Clairmont Gibson, Bert Braithwaite, Eon Bancroft, Ron Smith, Stephon Gouveia and Dillon Charles.
They are scheduled to compete at the Cordova Cardin Tournament from June 4 and the Roberto Balado Cup from June 19 to 23.
The Simon Pures, who are scheduled to depart on June 2, will also train during their stay in the island-nation renowned for producing outstanding boxers.
GBA’s Technical Director, Terrence Poole and Cuban Coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldan are the officials accompanying the boxers in the capacity of manager/coach and head coach respectively.
The association’s president, Steve Ninvalle who thanked the Commmisoner of Police, Leroy Brumell and the administrators of Sterling Products, had declared that the participation of the team hinges primarily on the acquisition of approximately three million dollars, two of which is just for airfare.
“Three down, five more to go,” he declared yesterday.
Ninvalle also intimated that GBA will be holding several fundraising activities to raise money so that all the boxers and officials can travel to Cuba.
