The Mustard Seed Contribution and Sports Centre, an affiliate of the Pepsi Sonics basketball Club, was officially launched as a non-governmental/non-profit organization on Thursday at the company’s High and Broad Street office.
The non-profit organization has been in operation since 2003 but was only registered as a legal entity in February 2007 under the Friendly Societies Act said Mustard Seed Secretary Bruce Haynes at a simple press briefing.
Mustard Seed Contribution and Sports Centre has seven members, President Merle Casey, Secretary, Haynes, Vice-President Linda White, PRO Raul Whyte, and Tracey Mc Kay, assistant secretary/treasurer along with three committee members.
Casey said the organisation’s main aim is to target the youths in Guyana with basketball as their main focus.
She revealed that annual seminars and clinics will be part of the Mustard Seed Contribution and Sports Centre objectives adding that these sessions will be held at the National Gymnasium to educate athletes. Other objectives include imparting life skills to youth, promoting healthy lifestyle and moral values.
Casey said that she believes that the organization can assist in curbing social issues in Guyana and hopes the issues which include economic stress can be address in a more formal way.
The organization, through its Pepsi Sonics affiliate has a joint venture with Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL). The centre is looking to develop further partnerships with other business entities to acquire and sustain resources for its players.
