Dear Editor,
I was surprised to read that Minister of Finance, Dr Ashni Singh was “shocked and horrified” by the stand of the AFC on amendments to the anti-money laundering bill (Stabroek News, May 16). This is after all the stuff of negotiations which oft-times involve compromises and tradeoffs.
History is replete with examples. In our own case there are precedents. One which comes to mind is the action of Dr Cheddi Jagan who, to use Dr Singh’s words, extracted “political concessions” in the 1970s for his support for a bill dealing with nationalisation.
Maybe again using the words of Dr Singh, Dr Jagan took “a shamelessly irresponsible position.”
Yours faithfully,
