Young Achievers. led by Wendell Austin yesterday spiked their way to 21-8 win against rivals Lusignan Combined as the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) two-day tournament concluded yesterday at the National Gymnasium.
The tournament, which is a part of the Guyana Volleyball Federation’s (GVF) initative to allow clubs the opportunity to host matches each week, saw the county’s best teams battling for prizes which included volleyballs and trophies.
After the usual preliminary rounds Young Achievers, Lusignan, GDF and the University of Guyana teams reached the semi-finals.
In the first semi-final Young Achievers defeated the University of Guyana by a 10-point margin while Lusignan defeated the GDF team by four points.
The final encounter between the two teams was dubbed a grudge match as Achievers defeated Lusignan a few weeks ago in the Kitana travel agency finals by 10 points.
Yesterday’s encounter was more evenly matched this time but Young Achievers played like true champions to secure the win.
Austin was adjudged the Most Valuable Player.
President of the GVF, Lenox ‘Lennie’ Shuffler said “Volleyball is reaching newer heights in this county and most of all Guyana; I urge teams to continue to practice and play hard, while making the sport something for the future of this country”.
He also said that the grass root camp will commence next month and encouraged the teams to be a part of that clinic.
