Two men accused of breaking into a store were placed on $200,000 bail when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Twenty-eight-year-old David Clarke, a clothes vendor of 54 Station Street and 21-year-old Shameer Rahim, a porter of 7 Yarrow Dam both pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter when it was read to them.
It is alleged that on the May 16, the duo broke into D Singh and Sons on King Street and stole two HP laptops, a security camera, a quantity of cash and other articles with a total value of $1,465,000, property of Deodat Singh.
Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat who represented Clarke in his bail application said that his client is a vendor by trade and has no antecedents. He said his client was picked up wrongfully and had nothing to do with the crime. He asked for reasonable bail.
Rahim’s attorney said that her client was at his place of employment where he was arrested and told that the haversack he had in his possession had the stolen items. She told the court that her client related that he was holding the haversack for someone he knew and had no knowledge of what was in the bag.
She said he willingly cooperated and it was surprising that he has been charged. She requested reasonable bail.
Police Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick in his submission objected to bail on the grounds that the second accused was found in possession of two laptops and $600,000 cash.
The objection was subsequently overruled by Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry and they are to return on the 17 for statements.
