A 33-year-old man appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday to answer to the charge of trafficking in persons.
Selwyn Lewis called ‘Selly’, of 2094 Nutmeg Street, Festival City was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him.
It is alleged that between June 1 and 30, 2012 at Red Dragon, he engaged in the trafficking of persons.
Police Prosecutor, Ramsahoye Rambajue objected to bail on the grounds that the accused is a frequent flyer and if granted bail will be a flight risk.
Attorney Nigel Hughes who appeared on behalf of Lewis said that his client was summoned to come to court and was also placed on $10,000 bail. His client is willing to lodge his passport if needed, he said.
He added that his client is a clothes vendor and has no pending matter before the court. He said he had a prior conviction in 2005 and served three years. He argued that another person was charged with the same crime and that person got bail. He added that his client just happened to be on the premises and doesn’t know anything.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry overruled the objection and granted him bail in the sum of $650,000.
He is to return to court on June 4.
