The Women’s Progressive Organisation (WPO) stands firm in its support of acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba and her efforts to root out incompetence and corruption at City Hall, in the wake of a recent “barrage of attacks” against her.
In a press release, the WPO said it has taken note of the attacks against Sooba, allegedly led by Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green and a group of vendors he reportedly mobilised to protest against her continued presence at City Hall.
The WPO finds it remarkable that these attacks have followed closely on the heels of Sooba’s announced campaign to root-out corruption at the Mayor and City Council.
According to the release, Sooba’s public disclosures that some councillors have pressured her to engage in actions which are underhanded and against the laws governing the municipality and her refusal to do so must be commended.
The group also finds Green’s statement that “there was no plan to address vending in the City” strange since he has been functioning as mayor since 1994 and it has been several years since the High Court had ruled this practice unlawful.
The WPO contends that Green is turning a blind eye to the continuous construction of illegal vending structures throughout the city especially on parapets and the city’s reserves.
