The inaugural Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Players Cup will continue today at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda with two fixtures.
In the opening game scheduled to commence at 6pm, Camptown Football Club, led by their attacking trident of Rishawn Sandiford, Devon Forde and Telson McKinnon will oppose Houston Stars and their duo of Eon Hunter and Jermaine Gilbert.
In the feature encounter at 8pm, the Guyana Police Force (GPF), led by their trio of Rashleigh Ramsay, Keron Boston and Romel Sancho, will lock horns with home side Georgetown Football Club (GFC) led by the evergreen Terrence ‘Old Head’ Lewis and the always safe Shawn Brown between the uprights.
The tournament, which officially got underway on Sunday, will see 15 teams competing in three groups of four and one group of three in a round-robin format. Each victory is worth three points while teams will receive one point for a drawn encounter.
The respective group winners and runners-up upon the conclusion of the group stage will progress to the quarterfinal round.
At the beginning of the quarterfinals, the GFA will institute the ‘luck of the draw’ rule.
This draw, which will be done at every knockout round, will randomly pair teams throughout the various elimination stages right up to the tournament final.
This procedure mirrors the UEFA Champions League drawing process as teams coming out of the same group cannot be paired against each other in the quarter-final round but can match up from the semi-final stage onwards.
However, there is a further twist in the tale as respective group winners can be drawn against each other. Group B, which is dubbed the `group of death’ has only field three teams. Each team in that group will start with three points and two teams will still progress to the knockout rounds.
