An accident which occurred at around 11 am yesterday at Britannia, West Coast Berbice has resulted in the driver of a minibus and a car suffering injuries.
Ivan Evans, 52, driver of the minibus, BPP 5432 and Lucien Christian, 23, who was driving a Toyota Fielder, PNN 9019 were rushed to the Mahaicony Hospital in a truck.
Christian of No 30 Village and a teacher of Belladrum Primary suffered broken feet and was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
An eyewitness said that Evans of No 23 Village was proceeding towards Rosignol when he tried to overtake another vehicle close to the turn. He reportedly knocked a canter, GMM 3288 that was parked on the road.
Reports are that he was trying to go back to his lane when he lost control and the bus started toppling. It veered into the path of the car that was “coming slowly” in the opposite direction. It landed briefly on the bonnet before ending up with its wheels in the air.
A resident said he and another person rushed to the scene and wrenched open Evans’ door and cut his seatbelt to get him out of the minibus. Other persons also rushed to assist Christian who was pinned to the car.
Meanwhile, Evans had about $1M hidden in the minibus and after the accident a young man grabbed the bag and ran away. He was later arrested and a portion of the money was recovered. Police were also looking for another youth who also reportedly made off with some of the cash.
In the meantime, residents called for speed humps to be placed on the approaches of the turn so accidents can be avoided.
