In yesterday’s Stabroek News, in an article titled `Indentured women came from life with no choice to one with some power’ it was incorrectly reported that 70 percent of the women on the ship referred to by the speaker Gaiutra Bahadur were pregnant. The correct figure is 11 percent.
Bahadur in a note to Stabroek News also pointed out that the quote in the fourth paragraph should read that “to an extent, women during indenture possessed a greater power to remake themselves unlike men… because they were in demand as sexual partners, housekeepers, cooks and companions” rather than “remain themselves.”
Stabroek News regrets the errors.
