After laying the foundation for a promising bodybuilding career by winning this year’s overall national novice’s title, Berbician Dwayne Mars has aspirations of posing and flexing his sculpted physique all the way to a pro card.
“Winning the novices championship was the first step for me to achieve my goal”, Mars told Stabroek Sport yesterday. “I always wanted to be Mr. Guyana, also win a CAC gold medal and bring a pro card to Guyana like my idol Hugh Ross who is also a Berbician but I could not compete because I had to go through the ranks”.
Mars is going through the ranks just fine.
At the Guyana Amateur Body Building Fitness Federation (GABBF) Novices Championships which was staged at the Theatre Guild two weeks ago, Mars used his sharp physique made up of a barn-door back and a washboard mid section to slice through the competition.
Now that the 22-year old Fitness Zone muscleman has crossed the Novices hurdle, he is preparing to make another jump at the Senior National Bodybuilding Champion-ships slated for July 20.
“I’m definitely looking ahead to the seniors now that I am the novices champion, the confidence is there and I’m looking to climb the ladder that is why I am in the gym six days a week” stated the 2012 Berbice Flex Night Champion.
So what can the public expect from him when he takes the stage in July?
“My legs need to be more defined, I’m looking to bring a complete chiselled physique, much better than I had on stage at the Novices and I will also be working on getting thicker, fuller shoulders…”
In the meantime, Mars will be blasting through intense workouts to further improve his mass of striated muscle. Like most local sportsmen and women who compete just for the love of sports, it is a struggle for the Port Mourant Secondary school teacher to maintain a livelihood and to perform at a high level because of the lack of sponsorship.
“It has been a struggle” Mars bemoaned. “I am a teacher by profession and it is very hard to train, work and maintain a bodybuilding physique and a livelihood.
Mars who teaches Integrated Science and Social Studies disclosed that had it not been for his background in Food and Nutrition, he would not be able to maintain his award winning physique.
As a result, the final year University of Guyana student will appreciate any amount of sponsorship he can receive.
With sponsorship, Mars can perhaps accomplish his dream of earning a professional bodybuilding card.
