The inaugural Guinness Greatest of the Streets National Championships will officially commence today at the Demerara Park Tarmac (Banks DIH Parking Lot), Industrial Estate Georgetown with eight fixtures scheduled to begin at 19:30hrs.
Eight teams inclusive of tournament winners and runner-ups will be divided in two groups of four.
The competing squads are Georgetown (GT) sides Leopold Street and Back Circle, East Coast (EC) units Plaisance and Victoria Church Yard United, Bartica outfits (BAR) Millennium and Hardcore and Linden (LIN) teams Silver Bullets and Silent Assassins.
In the opening round of fixtures Silver Bullets will oppose Hardcore while Leopold Street will take on Victoria Church Yard at 20:00hrs. This will be followed by Silent Assassins taking on Plaisance at 20:30hrs and Back Circle opposing Millennium at 21:00hrs.
Subsequent to an interval, the second round of fixtures will commence at 21:15hrs with Silver Bullets locking horns with Victoria Church Yard whilst Silent Assassins will tackle Millennium at 21:45hrs. In the final two games of the evening, Leopold Street will face off with Hardcore at 22:15hrs and Back Circle will engage Plaisance at 22:45hrs.
Each match will be 25 minutes in duration with twelve and a half minutes per half.
Three points will be awarded for every victory and there will be no draws. If an encounter is tied at the end of regulation time, two four minute halves of extra time will be played.
If a winner can’t be found during added time, penalty kicks will be taken. If penalty kicks fail to separate the two sides then sudden death kicks will be required to find a victor.
The tournament was created as a means of selecting the best possible community team from various geographical locales to represent the nation at the Regional Tournament in the St. Vincent and the Grenadines from June 21-23.
The winners will receive $400,000, runner-up $250,000, third place $150,000 and fourth $75,000. The winning team will also represent Guyana at the second annual Guinness Street Challenge scheduled for June 21-23 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Guyana hosted the inaugural Caribbean Guinness Challenge last year at the National Park.
