A Bagotville, West Bank Demerara grandmother was struck and killed on the Houston Public Road yesterday during her usual ride to work in the city.
Ellen Jones, 77, died on the spot after she was truck from her bicycle by a minibus sometime after 1pm. The driver of the bus is in police custody assisting with the investigation into the woman’s death.
Despite her age, she normally rode from her home to work in the city, where she operated a drink stand at the corner of Regent and Wellington streets
Roxane Jones told Stabroek News that she learnt about her mother’s death from persons who knew her.
She said that she received telephone calls from persons who informed her that her mother was involved in an accident and she subsequently went to the Georgetown Hospital, where she found her already dead.
She was not sure how her mother met her demise but mentioned that the bus driver told her that he did not see her and as a result struck her down.
Roxane added that her brother told her that he last saw Jones when she stopped to put air in her bicycle tire.
Jones had been riding from her home to George-town on a daily basis for the past 19 years. Her daughter said she loved riding and rode to wherever she had to go because she saw it as a means of staying fit.
Jones lived with her two grandchildren and is survived by her children and other relatives.
