‘I was high,’ says labourer found in woman’s house

A labourer, who claimed he was “high” when he was found in a woman’s house, was remanded to prison yesterday on a charge of intent to commit a felony.

Elroy Edwards, 20, of Craig, East Bank Demerara and formerly of North West District, initially pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

According to the prosecution’s case, on the evening of May 23, at about 6:30pm, Edwards went into Carol Joseph’s yard but subsequently left after she chased him out.

On the same night, around 8:30pm, Joseph, who was asleep in the house with her six children, was awakened by a noise in the home and when she got up to check, she saw Edwards in the bedroom with his hands on her eight year old daughter’s waist.

An alarm was raised and Edwards made his escape but he was subsequently arrested. After he was arrested, he indicated to police that he did not know what went into his head at the time.

When asked by the magistrate if he had anything to say, Edwards just replied: “I was high… I did not know what I do.” Based on his admission, a not guilty plea was recorded for him.

The prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds of the nature of the offence and the punishment it attracts.

As a result, the magistrate refused bail and she transferred the matter to the Providence Magistrate Court for May 29.
