A vendor was remanded to prison yesterday on charge that he robbed a woman after attacking her at the Stabroek Market Square.
Seon Davis, 35, of 3512 D’Urban Street, Lodge, was read a charge of robbery when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The prosecution’s case is that on May 20, at the Stabroek Market Square, Davis stole $40,000 cash, two bottles of perfume valued $4,000, an Alcatel cell phone valued $20,000, and other articles totaling $83,500, from Sandra Deopersaud.
The police prosecutor told the court that the victim was walking in the Stabroek Market Square with a haversack on her shoulder and the accused approached her and sprayed a substance in her face and made away with the articles. An investigation was launched and he was subsequently arrested.
The prosecutor also said that Davis admitted to the crime when arrested, but the man pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him yesterday.
The prosecutor objected to Davis being released on bail, suggesting that he will not return to court if granted his pre-trial liberty.
As a result, the magistrate refused bail and the case was adjourned until May 29, when it will be called for reports and fixtures.
