The National Gallery’s ’Anniversary Exhibition’, which marks 20 years since the gallery’ was founded, is currently on at its Castellani House premises on Vlissengen Road at 5pm.
According to a press release, over 90 paintings, sculptures, ceramics and drawings from the National Collection of Art are on show in the gallery’s ground floor and main first floor, showing the range of styles, techniques and media, and the outstanding quality of works which represent Guyana’s culture, landscapes and way of life, as expressed by many of the country’s leading artists.
The National Gallery was inaugurated on May 24, 1993, with Mrs Janet Jagan as its first Chairman of the Board. She remained chairman for 14 years until her death in 2009; this period was broken only by her service as President of Guyana between 1998-99. Founding member of the board, leading architect Albert Rodrigues, now serves as Chair, the release said.
The gallery’s May exhibition also marks Guyana’s 47th independence anniversary, as well as International Museum Day, founded by the International Council of Museums in 1977 in order to highlight museums and galleries, their collections and their role in society.
The Anniversary Exhibition opened to the public yesterday and will continue until Saturday August 3. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 2 to 6 pm. The gallery closes on Sundays and holidays. Admission is free.
