Dear Editor,
Despite its production and severe management problems, GuySuCo has still been able to add a touch of class to its sugar estate environs –albeit a superficiality.
The corporation has found time to introduce a dress code on sugar estates which is enforced by security guards, to the effect that ‘short pants’ are not allowed, and those who wear them are refused entry into the estate’s administration office. It is unclear what welcome is accorded (shorted) workers on strike, or even say an inebriated family member in ‘long pants.’
One would hope that the emphasis is not on ‘pants,’ since it is quite possible that the visitor could be dressed in a dhoti.
Then there is the exotic thought about what dress is required to access the estate swimming pool ‒ that is if it is not suffering the same drought as the canes prevalently.
One contemplative contribution from a rejected visitor was that the real objection to ‘short pants’ was that it was too symbolic a reminder of the chronic shortfall in production from which ‘long pants’ would prove a useful distraction.
But to get to the bottom of the story one must ask if barefooted persons in ‘long pants’ are passable.
Yours faithfully
E B John
