Guyana track and field athletes copped 10 medals at last weekend’s Hampton International Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
The two-day games attracted athletes from across the globe and saw 2013 Junior CARIFTA Games medalists Tirana Mitchell, Cassey George and Jason Yaw along with South American U23 Games bronze medalist Stephan James and national schools’ sprinter and distance athlete Onasha Rogers and Cassie Kirton bagging medals. Mitchell, Mercury Fast Laners (MFL) top sprinter, won the girls U17 100m final with a new personal best time of 12.06 seconds and the 200m final in 24.61 seconds.
Gillana Samuel (12.42 seconds)and Asia Ifill (12.48 seconds) were second and third in the 100m while Jeunice Maxime (24.87 seconds) and Natasha Poleon (25.27 seconds) were second and third in the 200m.
CARIFTA Games gold and silver medalist, Cassey George added two gold medals to her international collection in the girls U17 1500m (4:46.65 seconds) and 800m (2:15.60 seconds). George was the only athlete to run under five minutes in the 1500m.
Running Brave’s 400m specialist Stephan James easily won the men’s 400m final in 47.08 seconds ahead of Abilene Wildcats’ Kyle Greaux (47.58 seconds). Kyle avenged that defeat in the men’s 200m final clocking 20.98 seconds ahead of the national junior record holder who finished second in 21.24 seconds.
Jason Yaw, CARIFTA Games bronze medalist, showed consistency with his times in the 400m on the synthetic track and recorded a personal best time of 47.76 seconds which earned him second place behind Asa Guevara’s 47.69 seconds.
Onasha Rogers finished second in the girls U15 100m and 200m finals in 12.40 seconds and 25.87 seconds respectively.
Cassie Kirton also won a bronze medal in the Women 3000m in 11:14.42 seconds.
