President Donald Ramotar today requested a meeting with the Leader of the Opposition, David A. Granger.
A statement from APNU this afternoon said it unclear what President Ramotar wishes to discuss with Granger. Nevertheless, in the public interest, he agreed to the meeting, APNU said. However, it is expected that the purpose of the meeting would be clarified by the President, it added.
“As is publicly known and recognised, there are many pressing national issues of Governance, that require a timely resolution by the President, and which the Leader of the Opposition wants to discuss with him”, APNU said.
The request for the meeting with Granger comes in the wake of the deadlock between the government and the opposition over amendments to anti-money laundering legislation. The government has said that this had put the country at risk of severe repercussions from financial blacklisting. The opposition on the other hand has blamed the government for the delays associated with the amendment process.
