Dear Editor,
With the present global warming going on all over the world Guyana is not left out. I cannot speak much for Georgetown and other areas, but I can speak about Bartica where the present seawall is over 100 years old.
The First Avenue seawall has fractures and is being undermined. When the tide is high water seeps underneath it which creates small ‘caves.’
These ‘caves’ will become big time after time and in First Avenue I wouldn’t be surprised to see a building collapse and sucked into the earth sooner rather than later.
There is so much sand in the river there is need for it to be dredged and pumped back on the beaches to brace the wall.
There is a dredge lying idle at Linden. This dredge was rehabilitated by Region 7 and was used at the Regatta site years ago, after which it was returned to Region 10.
It has been doing nothing for the past years and could save Region 7 millions of dollars to avoid any collapse of the sea defences and damage to properties in First Avenue.
Whoever it may concern should look into this matter.
Yours faithfully,
Winston B Miller Sr
