Laundry for caretakers at the Children’s Convalescent Home in D’Urban Backlands will be much easier now, following the donation of six washers and dryers from the private sector yesterday.
The donation was made possible through assistance from the Rotary Club of Georgetown and three Rotary Clubs in Canada, Republic Bank (Guyana) and Sterling Products Limited, and was estimated to cost around $2 million.
The facility had just one dryer and one washer to cater for the laundry needs of over 30 children between the ages of 6 months to 7 years old. Administrator of the home Ewin Enmore said the new washers and dryers are a huge assistance, because they normally wash five loads of clothes every day.
President of Georgetown Rotary Club Khalil Alli said the club has a close relationship with the home and as such tries to help. He said he hopes the caretakers are better able to manage the laundry for the children and will be able to do it quicker with the new addition of washers and dryers. Similar sentiments were also expressed by the representatives from Republic Bank and Sterling Products.
The convalescent home is operated by the Guyana Red Cross Society and caters for children who are abused, abandoned or neglected. The children are sent to the home on recommendation from the Child Protection Agency. Once they are received by the home, they are cared for and sent to school.
