The woman accused of beating Azaad Ganie to death in his Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo home earlier this week was yesterday charged with murder and remanded to prison.
According to the police public relations department, Zaleena Whittington, age 44, appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
She will make her second court appearance on July 2.
Police had said in a press release that around 2030 hours on Monday, the body of the 64 year-old man was found in his home with injuries to his head.
A woman along with her son and daughter, and who are resident on the lower flat of the building, were arrested. However as the investigations processed the children were released.
A rolling pin, suspected to be the weapon that inflicted the fatal injuries, was found at the scene with Ganie’s body.
A neighbour had recalled hearing Ganie hollering “neighbour, neighbour” but said she thought that he was probably having a nightmare and did not make a big fuss about it. It was not until the police arrived at the house that she and other neighbours realized that something was wrong.
