Dear Editor,
I refer to your letter dated May 9 2013, concerning a letter captioned ‘Noise pollution affecting Covent Garden residents’ published in Stabroek News on May 6 and wish to convey the Ministry’s findings having conducted an independent investigation into the complaint.
The Ministry’s findings are as follows:
There is a high level of noise emanating from a music system affecting Ms Tanuja Singh and sections of the community. The loud, repetitive and continuous music originates from the premises of Ms Annette Hamer of Lot 118 Covent Garden Island, East Bank Demerara.
Ms Hamer’s premises are not in possession of the necessary licences for public entertainment.
These activities result in encumbrances by vehicles on the roadways making it difficult for persons to enter and leave their premises. Also, public entertainment at Ms Hamer’s premises affects the smooth flow of traffic along the East Bank carriageway. Above all, the loud continuous and repetitive music is a nuisance to the residents in the neighbourhood.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has engaged the Commissioner of Police and the Chief Fire Officer on the matter and has directed that appropriate action be taken to ensure that persons living in the community must enjoy the peace and comfort of their homes.
Yours faithfully,
Clement Rohee, MP
Minister
