Dear Editor,
The socialist political heritage of the PPP when they were in opposition was parked temporarily by a very aware Cheddi Jagan, who recognized that the world had moved on to one where there was only one superpower ‒ the USA. Thus he opened the economy and continued Hoyte’s ERP but with a more human face. This governance style of Jagan of lean and clean was abandoned in 2006 by Mr Jagdeo, as he retuned Guyana to Stalinism expressed as business buddy corporatism. This is a style of rulership that is top down, and was imposed on all the decisions of the political executive. The executive then used their offices to intimidate the trade unions and the private sector and now we see a frontal attack on the legislature.
This hegemony of the PPP was standard operating procedure from 2006 to the present. Luckily the people made a decision to bring this hegemonic rule to an end in 2011, but the PPP lives under the illusion that they have the majority vote of confidence from the people and thus attempt at every opportunity to impose their ways.
The AFC, the untainted political force in Guyana duly notified the PPP of the people’s wishes in May 2013; no Procurement Commission, no legislative support. Since then the former hegemonic rulers are in a state of political confusion; they call the AFC names; they run to NCN to slander the AFC leaders, but none of their public tantrums are shaking the AFC from that position of strength with the people behind them. Mr Nandlall can ‘hee’; Dr Ashni Singh can ‘haw’; Mr Irfaan Ali can ‘meeee’; Mr Rohee can ‘nay’ but nothing will change until President Ramotar does the right thing and fulfils the wish of the people by establishing the Public Procurement Commission.
The PPP is now beginning to break down, expressed most horribly in them trying all kinds of political stunts of begging and then ‘cussing’ to get the AFC to move. These types of political extremes do not appeal to the working class, which has never seen the PPP so naked politically. Many are asking the question, is this truly the PPP and is this what it has descended to?
Yours faithfully,
Asquith Rose
