A Surinamese national was yesterday killed on the spot after being hit by a taxi on Mandela Avenue as she was crossing the road.
Dead is 42-year-old Feng Xue Fang of Mandela Avenue, where she and her family managed a restaurant. The accident, which occurred sometime after 2pm, caused traffic to grind to a halt as police officers cordoned the area.
The woman’s body was catapulted some 60 feet from the point of impact. Undertakers later removed the mangled remains, leaving a pool of blood on the southern carriageway of the road.
The right side of the car’s windscreen was shattered, indicating where it hit the woman. There was also blood all over the car’s right side.
According to relatives of the woman, she had been living in Guyana for about ten years and had two children.
The driver of the car, which hit the woman, was taken into custody at the Ruimveldt Police Station. Prior to this, he was on the scene with shackles on his feet.
An official from the Chinese Embassy was also on hand to speak with the woman’s relatives and he also relayed information to police.
